Doctor Who (Seasons 5-7)
Definitely some of the best episodes there are in the show, Matt Smith had a really great run as the Doctor. From the first episode of season 5 to the last episode of season 7, everything about it was great. My favorite part of the 11th Doctor era was the use of the companions. For both Amy and Clara, their backstories have a huge part in the continuation of the Doctor’s story, and it incorporates their stories in so many ways. It’s really nice to see the stories of other people, and not just solely the Doctor. Many episodes revolved around the companions, which is a great change of pace. Amy and Rory are easily some of the best companions on the show, and arguably the best written. It’s also nice to see the same ones for a few seasons, instead of a constant change. They’re almost on the show for all of Matt’s tenure, which I like. The inclusion of River Song was a great addition to the plot, and season 6 especially was really well done with both her and Amy and Rory. It gives a really great continuous story, which takes place over several episodes. The nice thing about these seasons is that there are several storylines that take place, instead of each episode just being an individual story. Davies and Moffat did such a fantastic job of keeping everything fresh, as well as still mixing it up. My only complaint is that I wasn’t a fan of the 11th Doctor’s regeneration. It had a slow buildup to it, and then happened really quickly. I think it should’ve kept the traditional regeneration that is seen with the 9th and 10th Doctor. But it’s still awesome to see Peter Capaldi enter the scene. The theme song gets revamped, and though it’s still the same, it’s written a bit differently than how it was with the 9th/10th doctor. The intro is really cool, although I’m not a fan of it during season 7. The rest of the music is great as always, and although it gets rid of a few themes that were present with the 9th/10th, it still provides a unique sound. The effects were really great, and you can definitely tell that the technology steps up a little bit in these episodes. Overall, it’s incredibly good, from the effects, the characters, the music, and the story. Each and every episode gives you something awesome to watch, and the character development is really good. Plus, season 7 gives us the greatest TV episode ever written (The Day of the Doctor, S7 E15). These seasons are officially Berry Approved, so go watch them now!
