The Fly (1986)
The Fly (1986)
I’ve often seen this remake referred to as being better than the original, but I’d honestly disagree. This one just didn’t hit as hard. Story-wise, it starts out great, but at a certain point, it just kind of goes too far and doesn’t really click. I can’t say which certain point for spoilers, but it’s pretty much the whole second half. A couple creative decisions really just made the whole thing feel too weird. It’s supposed to be weird, but it’s a little much. But that’s really the only big gripe I have about it. The other one is that visually, this movie is not great. It’s very bland and colorless. Sometimes it’s not fun to look at, but the awesome special effects distract you from that. The final look of the Brundlefly is totally amazing, even if it’s only on screen for a minute or two. I love it, though. Jeff Goldblum does a pretty good job with his performance, but it’s nothing crazy. The characters weren’t super great, and they all seemed just average. No one really popped. I feel like I’m going too negative here. I’ve mentioned how everything was bland, but I do want to state that this was still a good movie. The negative things I mentioned are noticeable, but don’t weigh this down a super huge amount. It’s entertaining and fun, and the makeup and effects were crazy good. It’s just a small step down from the original. But I’d still recommend it to all horror/sci-fi fans, especially if you like movies like ‘The Thing’. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
