The Color Purple (2023)
The Color Purple (2023)
This is revolutionary. I’m not even joking. It’s one of the best musicals that came out in recent years, and one of the best movies of this decade. I figured it would be good, but would it live up to the original? Absolutely it did, and in fact, it was even better. Even though it had the same story, it just felt so different, and you could tell it was it’s own thing. I pretty much loved every second of it, except for a small handful of scenes. It was empowering, educational, beautiful, sentimental, and certainly memorable. It’s one of the few times a remake or retelling has been better than the original movie. The songs were amazing, with super strong vocals from the entire cast. Everybody shone. The choreography was great, too. The entire cast gave some of their performances, and can I just give a shoutout to Fantasia Barrino? If that woman does not win Best Actress this year, I’m going to commit several crimes. It would be an injustice to cinema itself if she wasn’t at least nominated. Celie was one of my favorite characters of the year, and Fantasia showed it. Even though my mind is reeling with what I’m thinking about this movie, I don’t feel like I can write much more. I may come back and add some more at some point, but right now, I just want to recommend this to everyone, because if you miss seeing this in theaters, then you’re missing out on an experience of a lifetime. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
