The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)
The Poughkeepsie Tapes
Found footage or documentary style horror movies are my jam. I absolutely love them, and a good chunk of them scare the crap out of me. Unfortunately, this one was one of the more weaker ones I’ve seen. The story itself is pretty solid, and has a ‘Zodiac’ kind of feel, in terms of killer and stuff. The writing around the main storyline wasn’t anything super special, but if you look at it as a whole, it’s interesting. I liked how the story was formatted between the found footage and the interviews. It goes back and forth, and doesn’t get too confusing. I think the big downside about this movie though is how even though the serial killer stuff is intriguing, it just doesn’t feel new. It just felt like a lot of other documentary style movies I’ve seen. There’s also a lot of parts of the found footage where the acting is awful and it just feels so unreal. Not always super believable. None of the acting was very good. The killer wasn’t also super menacing, but still just enough to keep you invested. That’s about all there is to say. The movie isn’t super confusing, and it’s short, but the acting isn’t good, and the story lacks a certain quality needed for these kinds of movies. I may revisit it in the future, but I probably wouldn’t recommend it, unless you just really, really like found footage/documentary horror movies.
