The Help (2011)
The Help
After watching this and reading some reviews, I can see why some people have some huge complaints about this. I understand their perspective, however, I enjoyed this so much that I can’t help but give it a perfect score. It’s one of the best movies I’ve seen that portrays the issues of the 60’s. Some people say that the film just boasts a “white savior” talking point, which I could see. But, with fantastic performances from Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, I wasn’t left feeling that way. I didn’t see Emma Stone’s character as the savior of the movie, or for the people. She just used her platform for good, because the maid couldn't. The story is touching, a little heartbreaking, and emotionally investing. It didn’t feel like 2.5 hours at all. The progression was great, as there weren’t any scenes that weren’t somehow substantial to the story. It shows a good glimpse at the life of maids in that time. Now, onto the cast. My goodness. I can’t get over how stacked it is, as well as how talented everybody is. Emma is awesome as always. Viola establishes herself as one of the greatest women to ever walk the earth. Octavia is absolutely everything. She OWNED the pie scene. Jessica is an absolute sweetheart, and a nice shine in the movie. I hate Bryce’s character, but you can’t deny she is able to sell any role. Lastly, Sissy is the hidden gem. She is hilarious, usually right when you need a laugh. I love the happy moments in this, because it’s such a serious topic. There were a couple times where I legitimately teared up, both happy and sad tears. Overall, this movie is perfect in my eyes, and I’m ignoring all negative thoughts about it. I’d recommend it to all drama/history fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
