Insidious: The Last Key (2018)
Insidious: The Last Key
Despite the very strong start to this movie, it somewhat falls off about halfway through, where it fizzles out. This movie continues the trend of movies being worse and worse as they go on. I’m hoping the fifth one will break that trend and give us one that surpasses some of the previous ones. This one specifically is pretty much another side story, like the third movie. There’s barely any connection to the Lamberts (except for the ending), which is what I really want to see. I know the Insidious franchise isn’t entirely based on them, but without them, it seems a bit bland. I do really like the direction this one took, except for the fact that it’s just a standalone. One thing I absolutely loved was how you get to see Elise’s present, as well as her childhood. It’s a cool character study, as it provides so much more information. I can’t say any more for spoiler reasons, I just wanna say that I love the creative choices done for her. The beginning of the movie does a great job of setting you up for that. The story itself is kinda mushy, except for the whole Elise thing. Definitely nothing spectacular. Several characters return, so it’s fun to see them again. Overall, the movie definitely isn’t as scary as the other ones, and it was lacking some luster. However, I’d still recommend it if you love these kinds of movies, and especially if you like the previous Insidious movies.
