The Godfather: Part II (1974)
The Godfather: Part II
A lot of the time with sequels, you often see them falter and not be as good as the original movie. But this movie is perhaps the greatest example of a sequel being just as good as the original, if not better. Personally, I think it's the greatest sequel of all time, only behind 'The Empire Strikes Back'. The first movie is still my favorite of The Godfather trilogy, but this one is a extremely close second. What's nice is that this one doesn't have to rely on the previous one to continue the greatness. Although most of the characters return, the plot doesn't have too much to do with the first one. Some events are connected, but it largely sits on its own. The continued growth and struggles of the Corleone family is so investing, and it's so hard to look away. The writing is so perfect it's not even funny. It's also my all time favorite performance of Al Pacino's. He's fantatsic in the first one, and even better in this. The pain and emotion he brings is truly remarkable. That goes for Robert de Niro, too. Seeing him as young Vito is brilliant casting, and he rocks it. I also liked seeing more from John Cazale as Fredo. The cinematography is gorgeous, with great shots of Miami, Cuba, and everywhere else they go. The scenery adds great authenticity, especially in the flashbacks scene with young Vito. The costumes and sets are also well done. Lastly, Nino Rota's score is, once again, one of the best things you'll ever hear, and it makes me want to be Italian so bad. Overall, this film is one of the greatest ever made (I put it at my #11 spot), and one of my favorites of all time. It's absolutely perfect in every way, and another great job by Coppola and the cast. I'd recommend it to everyone. This movie is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
