Immaculate (2024)
Immaculate
Will this be my favorite horror movie of 2024? I think it’s gonna be pretty hard to beat. There’s a couple still yet to be released for this year, but this one will definitely stick out for the rest of the year. Critically, it’s pretty solid, but nothing insanely crazy. I will say this though, what you think is going to happen, probably isn’t going to happen. I went in expecting some kind of supernatural horror, but it takes a totally different spin that I haven’t seen before. That’s all I can say without giving anything away. The first hour of the movie definitely takes some time to get into, as it slowly builds up to the climax. It wasn’t slow, it just takes awhile for the suspense and tension to swell. Then, you hit the last 30ish minutes, and holy crap, it’s one of my favorite things I’ve seen all year. Actually, it’s one of my favorite third acts of any horror movie, maybe even all time. The way it was shot was immaculate (see what I did there?), and it gives the same vibes as ‘The Blair Witch Project’, ‘Skinamarink’, and other found footage/POV films. The catacombs scene especially. It was both freaky and also beautiful at the same time. Moving on, none of the characters really stood out, but the acting was decent. Sydney Sweeney does a fantastic job. I wish there was also a little more explanation behind some of the nuns, and it left me a little confused. But, in the end, I didn’t care, because I had such a good time. It was both disturbing and also ironically funny. I won’t say any more, because you should experience this for yourself. Overall, the story is unique (though a little cliche at some points), the acting was good, the makeup was amazing, and it provided a fun and disturbing experience. Some parts were a little gross, some were a little funny, and the last several minutes were just pure cinema. I’d definitely recommend this to all horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
