Lost Highway (1997)
Lost Highway
The beauty of David Lynch’s work is that you’re left scratching your head, but in the best way possible. I think that can go for almost all of his movies, and you’ll probably see me use that line for future Lynch reviews. This one in particular was very well put together in terms of the confusion and understanding. Let me explain that. By the time I finished the movie, I definitely felt a bit confused, yet at the same time, everything made sense. I knew exactly what happened, and I understood it, but you don’t understand the reasons WHY everything happened. That’s what I love about Lynch. I really liked the story, and the way it’s almost split into different parts, except everything is intertwined. It’s a very well spun story that provides some very mysterious, very creepy, and very thrilling moments. I enjoyed most of the characters, even the ones that are intolerable. Bill Pullman, Patricia Arquette, and Robert Blake all do a great job. Robert Blake as Mystery Man is one of the greatest castings ever, and every single scene he was in was captivating. His very first scene at the party was absolutely chilling. It felt so off, and I totally loved it. Overall, this movie was pretty good, and I definitely need to let it settle in my brain so I can understand it a little better. I know I’ll revisit it and probably even enjoy it more the second time. I’d recommend it to most thriller/mystery fans, and especially if you love Lynch pieces such as ‘Wild at Heart’ or ‘Inland Empire’. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
