Dracula (1931)
Dracula
Coming in as the 23rd perfect movie in Berry history, Dracula is certainly for the ages. Despite having a couple minor flaws, it’s not enough to bring down the points for this classic. It’s so iconic, and one of the first truly impactful horror films. I’d say that if you don’t like older black and white films, then this probably isn’t for you. Some may find this boring, but trust me, it’s so awesome. Bram Stoker’s original story is so good, and it’s so cool that over 100 years later, it still has relevance, both in literature and film history. Bela Lugosi gives off an artful performance, and like the movie, it’s certainly one to be remembered. He is the true Count Dracula. No one can pull it off like he does. His icy stare, hypnotic eyes, and menacing (yet almost trusting) presence is perfect. Dwight Frye is perfect as Renfield, as he also gives an outstanding performance. I loved the absence of music in certain scenes, because it gives such an unsettling feel. It’s creepy, artful, and just a masterpiece. I also love the sets and painted backdrops. The classic movie feel is so hard to beat. Overall, this movie is perfect, and I’d highly recommend it to all old/classic horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
