Renfield (2023)
Renfield
Although this definitely isn’t the best movie ever made, it was pretty fun, with plenty of gore and jokes. It’s a more modern take on Dracula/Renfield’s relationship, which kind of works, but also doesn’t. The plot was paper thin, and many times, you had no idea which direction the movie was going. It’s a major fault, as it made it hard to keep up with what’s happening. It was just jumbled. It also felt like it strayed away from Dracula and Renfield, which was boring. However, besides that, I enjoyed everything else. Nicolas Cage does beautifully as Dracula, and every second he was on screen, I was just thirsting for more. He’s so captivating and spooky. His makeup and effects were very well done. They gave his character (and the movie) a somewhat campy feel, even though it’s pretty dark. And of course, Nicholas Hoult as Renfield is awesome. Both him and Cage embody their characters awesomely. I especially love the scenes where they recreated Dracula (1931). It’s one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a recent movie. The other very fun thing was all the gore. Most of the time, it was pretty over-the-top and unnecessary, but still entertaining. The soundtrack was also decent, though it didn’t always feel original. Overall, this movie has a lot of room for improvement, but I still liked it. I’d probably recommend it to all comedic horror fans, especially if you love monsters/vampires.
