Fright Night (1985)
Fright Night (1985)
There is literally nothing like a classic 80’s horror flick. But not just any 80’s horror flick. It’s about vampires, has tons of physical effects, and stars Roddy McDowall. It’s everything you could ever want. That being said, realistically, this movie was mediocre at best, it was pretty enjoyable for the most part. There were definitely some very cheesy moments, which was to be expected. The story was very fun and almost campy. It’s funny how in cinema history, we have masterpieces like ‘Nosferatu’ and ‘Dracula’. Then, skip forward a few decades we have ‘Fright Night’ with Chris Sarandon as vampire. It’s amazing and I love it. I never pictured Sarandon as a vampire, but he does a pretty decent job. Once he’s thrown into the makeup and nails, it’s perfect. He’s got just the right aura; the handsome, charming neighbor who turns into a bat at night. He fits the vibe. Of course, Roddy McDowall is awesome as well. My love for that man only grows. The acting all around wasn’t the strongest, with some corny line deliveries that made me chuckle. It wasn’t bad, but sometimes unintentionally funny. Finally, the physical effects were absolutely awesome. The use of fake blood and makeup was great, and makes me wish more modern horror would use it. The props, sets, and facial makeup is a lost art. It’s sad it’s not used as much, but it makes you appreciate these movies so much more. Overall, this movie is sometimes a little bland, but there are some great scenes that make you love one of the greatest decades of horror, which is the 80’s. I’d probably recommend this to most horror fans, especially if you like ones that are borderline comedy.
