Rushmore (1998)
Rushmore
Look, I know I throw around perfect scores a lot. But guess what? I don’t care, I like cinema. I physically cannot give this anything less than 100%. King Wes is able to deliver like no other director can. The amount of genius that man possesses is just so insane. Originally, I wasn’t a super huge fan of his early stuff, but after seeing this, I’ve completely changed my mind. It’s been a really, really long time since I’ve seen a movie so serious, yet so comedic. This definitely has some of the best lines I’ve heard in my entire life. That amount of times I was so invested in the love triangle, but then the most random line would pop up, I’d laugh, and then immediately get serious again. It’s one of the most perfect blends I’ve ever seen. The whole story and script is like that. Little baby Jason Schwartzman was perfect in his role, and accompanied by Bill Murray, they made a great dynamic duo. I don’t wanna give too much away about the plot, but it felt very relatable, even though I’ve never been through anything Max goes through. He just felt so personal. I don’t know. The entire cast did a great job of making themselves known. I love how by the end, you feel like you know each one of them personally, especially Max. The costumes and sets were also fantastic. The school uniforms, the play sets/props, the scenery, everything was perfect. It felt so homey and comfortable, yet so large and unexplored. Lastly, the soundtrack was beautiful and fit the mood really well. Some bits had the classic Wes Anderson sound, as well as some other moments that were subtle but very present. I just can’t get over how good this movie is. Overall, it’s quite literally perfect, and I can’t wait to rewatch it. I’d definitely recommend it to all comedy fans, especially if you like ones on the artsy/serious side. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
