Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
Surprisingly, this was better than what I thought it would be. Considering it’s the fourth movie of a somewhat crappy franchise. It definitely does have its problems, but it’s still somewhat entertaining, if you look past all the corny stuff. Easily the biggest flaw and sore spot is the writing. Though the story makes sense, it seemed so stupid and pointless. I wasn’t a huge fan of the familial connections, which is the reason Michael goes back to Haddonfield. It just felt like the writers were grabbing for anything. Also, the fact that Michael and Dr. Loomis both came back to life, despite seemingly being killed in the second movie. The characters were also not great either. None of them stuck out as heroic or anything. I was kind of hoping Michael would just take care of them all. The acting wasn’t all that great either, much like several other 80’s horror movies. After all that being said, I still liked seeing Michael back at it again. Sometimes it was silly, but still mildly entertaining. The kills were fun, and though not as inventive as the second movie, the gore and practical effects were fun. There were great chase scenes and a terrific ending. Overall, this movie wasn’t the best ever, but pretty decent for a fourth movie sequel. Hopefully the rest of the franchise will follow suit. I’m not sure if I’d watch it again, but I’d probably recommend it to most ‘Halloween’ fans.
