Malignant (2021)
Malignant
Look, I love James Wan, and he’s one of my favorite horror directors, but this one was a miss for me. It does have its strong moments, especially the last action sequence. There were times where I was locked in, invested in all the fun, gory stuff that was happening. But, more times than not, I didn’t really care at all about the characters or story. It wasn’t horrible, it just didn’t stick out to me. It was hard to get into it in the first place, which didn’t help. The plot was just slow and boring up until the big reveal, to which it then got good. I just didn’t care all that much, because it didn’t seem interesting or new. Like I said, it was like that until a certain point, then it was crazy. The characters weren’t great, which is another thing. No one stuck out, which made it hard to follow along or feel any kind of relatability. The performances were alright, it’s just that everyone was so lame. The CGI was also not the best, though they could’ve been worse. There were lots of times where it was extremely noticeable, which led to pulling you out of the movie a little bit. Not by much, but just enough for me. Overall, this movie wasn’t the best, though it does have a couple of somewhat redeeming moments. It’s not one I’d probably watch again, and I don’t think I’d recommend it, unless you really like James Wan’s filmography (although it didn’t work for me).
