X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
X-Men: Apocalypse
Here is, yet again, a very underrated X-Men movie. That being said, it’s definitely not the best movie of the franchise, which is obviously why it’s underrated. For me, it provides a fun movie, with a great combo of drama and action. Yes, the writing wasn’t completely the best, but I thought it was fun. Also, this one felt way more cliche than the others. It didn’t really seem to go anywhere, and it felt kind of like I’d seen it before. Just a classic good vs evil story, and the stakes felt both high and low at the same time. I think the best way to sum it up is that if this movie didn’t exist, it wouldn’t really change the franchise that much. However, I still think it was pretty decently made. Enough of me going back and forth between the good and bad, I’ll get on with the story and characters. The plot itself, as stated, didn’t feel new, but has some fun elements of action and team-ups, as well as some added backstory. Some bits of it felt like Indiana Jones, some felt like Black Adam, and some just felt like a campy superhero movie. I quite enjoyed it, though I know others don’t. Pretty much all the main characters of the X-Men prequels return, with an addition of a few members, as well as some new villains. I loved seeing Cyclops and Quicksilver return, especially Quicksilver. Also, it was kind of cool and funny to see how Charles lost his hair. Finally, the special effects were really good, and they weren’t usually too distracting. They helped give the movie a dark tone, but also being visually pleasing as well. For me, at least. Overall, this movie was solid, and though not the strongest entry of the franchise, I still liked it. I’d probably recommend it to most superhero/Marvel fans.
