The VVitch (2015)
The VVitch
The first time I ever watched this, I didn't find it very entertaining. However, after a second viewing, I love it so much more, and I appreciate it for what it is. It's such a simple setting with a simple family, but things just keep taking a turn for the worst. I really liked the way it focuses on an isolated, religious family, and the acting was really good. This movie does a great job of showing the true nature of people when something unexplained happens, and they don’t know what to blame or who to trust. The other really awesome thing about this movie was the writing. A lot of the movie was based on writings and historical journals that dealt with witchcraft hundreds of years ago, and much of the dialogue in the movie was based on those journals/diaries. The music was also great, and there were some sections that had some really good string arrangements that perfectly set the mood. It's just so well made. The whole thing. Especially the opening scene with the certain....thing that happened to the baby. So unhinged and crazy, yet disturbingly awesome. Overall, it's a fantastic directorial debut from Robert Eggers, with great writing, great acting, and an ominous environment. I'd definitely recommend it to most horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
