Gladiator II (2024)
Gladiator II
This film doesn’t surpass the first one, not like anyone was expecting it to. But it was still just as entertaining, with just as solid performances and just as solid action scenes. My biggest critique is the originality of the story, so let’s get that out of the way. It wasn’t badly written or anything. But it relies a lot on past events and characters to keep the story moving forward, rather than standing out in any unique ways. Of course, there are several parts about the film that are original, but I think it should’ve tried to be its own thing a little more than it did. But I loved the way it pays tribute to the past. It is done with respect and class. Like I said, it wasn’t bad in any way, there was just a tad bit too much piggybacking on the first film. I also think the visual effects were very noticeable at times. Sometimes it stuck out because of the old setting, so it seemed a little off in a couple scenes. But it wasn’t often. Moving on, the performances were absolutely phenomenal from literally every single person in this film. There wasn’t anyone who didn’t fit. Paul Mescal was perfect for his role, and I wouldn’t trade him for anyone else. Pedro Pascal fit the bill beautifully, but let me tell you this, Denzel Washington absolutely killed it, like he always does. There’s absolutely no way he doesn’t get nominated for this, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he made Oscar history with his third win for this film. The way you see his lust for power was astonishing. Absolutely amazing in every way. Next up, the action scenes in this were fantastic, and they definitely rival the first. Especially the fight between Lucius and Acacius. The choreography all around was so smooth and flawless. So were all the stunts. Lastly, the score was great, providing a very exciting and authentic feeling to the film. Overall, this is definitely one of the better sequels I’ve seen, especially considering how good the first one was. I’d recommend it to all action/drama fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
