Dunkirk (2017)
Dunkirk
Definitely one of the better war movies I’ve seen, this one is thrilling from beginning to end. I absolutely loved the opening shot, and it gives you the perfect setting for how the movie feels. The reason this movie is so good is that despite it being a war movie, there is actually not a lot of action. Though it may sound boring (and it was at a few points), it was still really interesting. Watching the evacuation of the soldiers was the real thrill of the movie, not the war or battles. Although action was still present, watching the strategic plans and movements that the rescuers used was what gives the movie its flare. The story was really good, and it’s what makes this different from other war movies. I also loved how well the cast did. You get unknown names such as Fionn Whitehead and Jack Lowden, who did so well. You also have the notable actors such as Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, and Tom Hardy. Everybody fit their roles so well, and I especially loved the role that Barry Keoghan is in. He plays George Mills, a 17 year old man who sets out with his friends to help rescue the stranded soldiers. (SPOILER) He ends up dying in the movie, and it makes me realize how many men were 17 or 18 years old that lost their lives in the war. Another reason this movie is so great is because of how young the cast/soldiers are. It gives you a sense that these men could’ve been your family, friends, or neighbors. You feel a connection with many of the characters, and it really leaves you feeling impacted. Most people don’t appreciate the sacrifice that the soldiers in WWII made, and this movie helps you realize what the ultimate sacrifice is. It also leaves with a message of not taking life for granted. The score was also extremely good, and the music helps every single scene. It makes it feel intense and suspenseful, and Hans Zimmer, once again, delivers a phenomenal score. Overall, I would definitely recommend this movie, and everyone should watch it.
