Evil Dead II (1987)
Evil Dead II
I think I’m in the minority here when I say that I liked the first Evil Dead better than this one. That’s only going off of Letterboxd and Rotten Tomatoes scores. As far as I can tell, the general consensus is that this one is better and more enjoyable, but I would have to disagree. I am in agreement that it’s better than the first, with a bit more structured plot, better characters, and very fun antagonists. However, I think I liked the first one better because of the excessive use of body horror. Not that this one doesn't have it, but the first one felt more bloodier and gory, which I really liked. I also thought this one was a little more out there in terms of fantasy and stuff like that. It was a little too much at times, but not often. I liked the more simple style that the first one had. But, that’s also the reason why this one is better. The stakes are raised and there is a more powerful, more menacing evil presence. There’s a lot to enjoy about it. Bruce Campbell is amazing again, and a whole lot better in this movie. He finally achieved his iconic look, which I thought was awesome. Such a great scene where he attaches his chainsaw hand. The acting was better too, though still very corny. And of course, like I said, the practical effects were absolutely fantastic, and so far, the Evil Dead franchise is showing why it’s some of the best movies out there that use practical effects to their advantage. Overall, this movie was pretty well made, definitely out there, and a fun sequel to the first. I didn’t enjoy it as much, but it was still great. I’d recommend it to all horror comedy/Evil Dead fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
