Face/Off (1997)
Face/Off
I thought to myself, “There’s no way John Travolta can play Nicolas Cage, and Nicolas Cage can play John Travolta.” Boy, was I wrong. It just works in every way possible. Down to the mannerisms, the voice, everything. One of the most perfectly cast movies I’ve ever seen. You started off hating Cage, then you wanted Cage to win, then you went back to hating him. You started off pulling for Travolta, then hating Travolta, then loving him again. I love how confused you get with your emotions and feelings, and who to pull for. The character swap is so convincing that you truly believe the fake people are the real ones. That will make sense once you’ve seen this. Again, one of the best cast movies (and dual performances) I’ve ever seen. That was the easiest highlight of the movie. And of course, the story was fantastic. It’s something you’ve never seen before, and probably won’t see again for a long time. The action sequences were really fun, but I also loved the more dramatic scenes. It gives a great balance to the plot. It also helps make the movie not too boring. You don’t get too much of one thing for too long. I will say this though: even though the action was fun, it was pretty standard. Nothing too crazy, but still entertaining. I also think the movie was a little long, but not by too much. The boat chase scene at the end also felt dragged out, so the conclusion overstayed its welcome. But that’s just me. Overall, this movie was very well made, and probably one of the best action/crime flicks of the 90’s. Definitely one I’d recommend to all action fans, and one I’ll surely watch again. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
