No Country for Old Men (2007)
No Country for Old Men
I can definitely say this is one of the best movies to watch if you want a story that immediately hooks you and doesn’t let go until the credits. The opening scene perfectly sets you up for what you’re about to witness, as well as setting the tone in a disturbing but almost awesome way. I’d say this movie is a combination of crime, thriller, mystery, and almost detective-y. It has an awesome but very unsettling mood to it. And as I said, the movie keeps you sucked in the entire time. It constantly adds new details and keeps the plot progressing in such an intriguing way. There was a lot of anticipation and suspense for me, so if you like those things, then this is for you. The acting was incredible all around, and I don’t have a single complaint about any of the characters. Obviously, Javier Bardem was the real star of the movie, though Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones shouldn’t be overlooked. I really liked the western take the movie gives them. It was also good to see Woody Harrelson, although (spoiler) he has a short-lived part. But Bardem absolutely steals the show in every way possible. Not only is his character interesting to watch and learn about, but he’s absolutely terrifying. He’s about as close to a perfect antagonist as you can get, and he’s one of the very few movie characters that has absolutely terrified me. Every second he was on screen, I was legitimately scared, and he made my heart race multiple times. He just brings an unsettling and intense vibe, almost in a Norman Bates kind of way. Anyways, he was awesome. The music was pretty good, although there were several scenes of silence. However, it helped build the suspenseful mood. I also really liked the setting, as it had a modern day western feel that helped fit the story. Overall, this movie was extremely unnerving, but still very fun and intriguing. I would most definitely recommend it to all crime/thriller fans. Plus, it has one of the best endings in a crime/thriller movie. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
