Poor Things (2023)
Poor Things
Although I definitely didn’t enjoy this as much as other people did, I can still say that this is a very well made and an obvious Oscar worthy movie. This is only my second Yorgos experience, and his style of filmmaking is starting to grow on me. I definitely enjoyed this more than ‘The Favourite’, also starring Emma Stone. The story itself was pretty good, although I’m not a big fan of what was done with Bella’s character after she left Dr. Baxter. Yes, I sound like a boomer, but I don’t think it’s necessary and it’s very distracting. But besides that, I think it was very well written. In a way, it kind of takes a Frankenstein turn while still feeling very original. I LOVED the sci-fi moos and setting, which I was not prepared for at all. Based on the trailer, it felt more like a period piece, but it goes so much more than that. The production design was so insanely good. It’s a great mix of the future and the past, perfectly balanced. It was colorful and vibrant, but you also get some crisp black and white. The cinematography was pretty good, although the fish eye lens does get a little much sometimes. Every single character was pretty awesome, but the easy and obvious standout is Emma Stone. Her Golden Globe win was well deserved, and hopefully an Oscar win is also on the way. I love the way she portrays her mental maturity with her physical maturity, and how it seems so natural. Dafoe and Ruffalo were also great. The makeup, hairstyling, and costumes all stood out and made the movie feel really authentic. Finally, the score was fantastic, and I both hated and loved the odd, mysterious sound it added. It was really good, but also produced feelings of nervousness and skepticism. Overall, this movie was very well made, although there were definitely parts where I felt uncomfortable and it was drawn out. But by the end, you come to appreciate Yorgos’ direction and style. I’d probably recommend this to most sci-fi/drama fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
