Hairspray (2007)
Hairspray
I wasn’t really sure how I felt going into this movie, and I’m still not sure how I felt coming out. It was a good movie, but not really my cup of tea. I usually really like musicals, but this one felt a little over the top to me. It was kind of a weird combination of Grease and High School Musical (which are both amazing movies). I liked the story, but some of the characters were a bit obnoxious. I think the whole thing just felt very dramatic, if that makes sense. But I still enjoyed most of it. As I stated, the story was good, and I loved the setting. It has the stereotypical 60’s greaser/jock kind of feel, much like Grease. I definitely wasn’t bored, I just didn’t care for some of the scenes. But all the characters, though not always likeable, were very well portrayed. It had a stacked cast of Travolta, Pfeiffer, Walken, Efron, Marsden, and Bynes. It was definitely a bit odd seeing John Travolta play an obese mom, but still very humorous at the same time. I also very much liked Walken and Mommy Michelle. Nikki Blonsky also did a fantastic job in the lead role, which was perfect for her. I wasn’t a huge fan of the soundtrack, even though the music was good. It had the 60’s feel to it, with a touch of some modern stuff. It was well written and performed, just not my favorite. Also, the costume design was spot on. Overall, I don’t think it’s one I’d watch again, but I’m glad I've seen it once. I’d recommend it to those who like musicals, though it may be a hit or miss.
