Young Frankenstein (1974)
Young Frankenstein
Mel Brooks is a genius. That could literally be this whole review and I wouldn’t need anything else. Both him and Gene Wilder make the perfect team when putting this movie together. Now, I do think this one is my least favorite in the Mel Brooks trinity (the other two being ‘Spaceballs’ and ‘Blazing Saddles’), but I still love it. I’ve seen it several times, and it only gets better each time I see it. The story is very obviously based on Frankenstein, but with a very comedic twist. I love that you still get the classic horror story, but this isn’t a horror movie. It’s absolutely hilarious, while still having a few serious moments. Like stated, Mel Brooks is a genius, and he can put a great spin on anything. You get the terrifying look of Frankenstein’s monster, but then you also get him dancing to “Puttin’ on the Ritz” in a tux (one of my favorite movie scenes of all time). Speaking of Frankenstein's monster, can we talk about Peter Boyle? He literally gave the performance of a lifetime, and he was absolutely snubbed for an Oscar. I’m not completely serious, but I’m also very serious. He has the perfect build, and also a very good emotional range (despite his lack of dialogue). Gene Wilder was also perfect, with some great line deliveries that are hilarious. And I can’t forget Marty Feldman either. He’s got the perfect face and body for playing a mad scientist’s assistant. The whole cast is perfect. It’s really hard to find any complaints about this. It’s not perfect, but just about. It’s hilarious, goofy, and very creative. I’d most definitely recommend it to all horror/comedy fans, especially if you’ve seen other stuff by Mel Brooks. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
