Parasite (2019)
Parasite
It’s unbeknownst to me why I waited six years to watch this film, and now that I’ve finally gotten around to seeing it (on the Criterion collection, of course), I’m kicking myself for not seeing it sooner. It’s one of the most masterful pieces of work I’ve seen from the 21st century, and even all time. The only main reason I watched it on this specific night was to prep for Bong Joon-Ho’s ‘Mickey 17’, and I’m shook. I wanted to watch it anyway, but I finally sat down to do it, and then immediately went to YouTube to watch all of the acceptance speeches for its several Oscar wins. Every single one is well deserved. The screenplay was locked down and tight, and it took my breath away so many times. The farther you get into the film, the more little details and surprises keep popping on, adding icing to the cake. I can’t say what specifically, but just know that this isn’t what you’d expect. The great part is how it’s several genres at once, and it’s not confused at all on what it wants to be. It’s a black comedy, a drama, a crime thriller, a suspense, and at times, a horror. All of those genres blend perfectly to make one big rollercoaster of fun. The acting was very strong, and I loved how each character was their own, and how each one plays a very important part of the progression of events. There wasn’t one person who felt out of place, or was there just to be there. The score was magnificent, adding great suspense and emotion. Even when it wasn’t as prominent as it could’ve been, it was just subtle enough to add some zip. That’s all I can say for now. I don’t want to give much more away. I’ll leave you with this advice if you’re going into it for the first time: don’t expect anything in particular. Don’t look it up beforehand. Just enjoy the effort put into it. And it should be watched by everybody at least once in their life. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
