Priscilla (2023)
Priscilla
This was about what I expected it to be. I went in looking for Elvis and Priscilla mush, and that’s about what I got. I may take some heat for what I’m about to say, I think a good chunk of the stuff in this movie is covered in 2022’s ‘Elvis’. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of things from this movie that weren’t seen in ‘Elvis’, as well as it being in Priscilla’s perspective. It did a good job with that. But it didn’t really feel like anything new. One thing I loved is the release time for this film. After watching ‘Elvis’ last year, you get some of the drama between the Presley couple that was cut out from that one. In a way, it almost feels like a sequel, without it being directly related. It’s one of the best examples of two movies to watch back-to-back, without them being a part of a series or franchise. You may not think so, but that’s just how it felt for me. It was a little hard to sit through at times because of that, though. I felt like I’d already just seen everything, so it didn’t feel like anything new. It’s also very hard seeing somebody else as Elvis besides Austin Butler. Jacob Elordi did a good enough job, but he ain’t no Austin. However, Cailee Spaeny did fabulous, and though it’s nothing Oscar-worthy, she definitely stood out to me. Finally, the soundtrack was a great highlight, with a great selection of songs. It helped fit the tone of the movie in a modern yet old way. Overall, this movie was decently made, though I struggled sitting through it at times. If you want to watch a movie based around Priscilla, this is obviously it, but I definitely prefer ‘Elvis’ over this.
