Rooster Cogburn (1975)
Rooster Cogburn
This is the sequel to the 1969 version of True Grit, and this is one of the very few cases where the sequel is better than the original movie. I really loved the story of this one, and to me, it was more entertaining than the first movie. Although this movie doesn’t get as much love as it should, I think the writers did a great job with the story and characters, and it makes for an entertaining movie. I also like how this movie is kind of a stand alone sequel. Although there are references to the first movie, you could watch this one without needing to see the first. John Wayne does a great job with Rooster’s character, and he keeps the same gritty but friendly attitude. Katie Hepburn was one of the highlights of the movie, and her character was awesome as well. She had a great personality, and although sometimes strict, she still had a somewhat comedic side that gave this movie a great feel. The acting of everyone else was great, and although there wasn’t any special flare with any of the antagonists, they were still good all around. The music was great, and it had the awesome John Wayne/Western feel to it. I also loved the scenery of this movie, especially when the river towards the end. Despite the gunfights and shooting, it was a comfortable, beautiful movie, and I liked it a lot. Overall, I would definitely recommend it to Western fans, and I am ready to watch it again. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
