Funny Games (1997)
I’ve been meaning to watch this for quite some time, and now that I finally got around to it, I’m glad I did. Although it was made pretty well, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped I would. Don’t get me wrong, it was intriguing and gripping, but I kind of lost interest a couple times throughout the film. I can’t really tell you why. I think it’s because it was just different than what I was expecting, so it caught me off guard. The story was well written, though nothing too complex. It had great antagonists but forgettable protagonists. The acting was solid, although I loved Arno Frisch. He was definitely the standout, and his creepy looks at the camera were awesome. The subtle nods to the audience about what’s going on and making them a part of the violence was absolutely genius. It was thrilling and personally connects you to the events that go down. Especially after a certain person’s death, with the 10 minute single take shot. Man, that was good. But overall, the movie moved slowly and lost me a couple times. I think it’s one I would enjoy so much more on a rewatch, because I can go back and find the little things I missed before. It’s one of those movies you have to let soak in, and then analyze better the second time. I’d probably recommend this to most horror/thriller fans.
