Fargo (1996)
Fargo
Ever since I first learned about this movie, I’ve only ever heard good things about it. I can certainly understand why it’s so raved about. It’s one of the best crime/thrillers I’ve seen in awhile. The Coen brothers did a knockout job with the direction and screenplay. It flowed extremely smoothly, and the runtime was perfect. It wasn’t too long, but it wasn’t crammed or rushed. It fit in everything it needed to, without overstaying its welcome. I loved how simple the whole thing is, yet there’s plenty of detail to pay attention to. You’re constantly wrapped up in the events taking place. I also love how it takes itself seriously, while still being a dark comedy. Between the funny Minnesota accents and the line deliveries from McDormand, Macy, and Buscemi, it provides several quick bits of comedic relief between the mystery of the situation. I’m glad it was done the way it was. There are two teensy weensy negative things I want to say, though. One is that I wasn’t as invested as I wanted to be. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed it, but there were times where my mind just started to wander. I don’t know. The other thing is that I think the acting was *slightly* overrated. I think the accents threw me off. I was expecting deep, dramatic performances, and that’s not quite what I got. Everyone stood out in their own special way, especially (as I said) McDormand, Macy, and Buscemi. I just love William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi. Totally off topic, but I would love to see Buscemi in a Wes Anderson movie. His seriousness yet hilarious persona would be perfect. Anyways, this movie was one of the best crime movies I’ve seen. I think it’s one I’d definitely enjoy on a second watch, so I’ll for sure be visiting it again. I’d recommend it to all crime/thriller/mystery fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
