Past Lives (2023)
Past Lives
I’m not gonna lie, I think this is a tiny bit overrated. I’ve heard extremely good things about this movie, and Rolling Stone even ranked it as the best movie of the year. I don’t necessarily agree, but I still think this is a very solid movie. It’s packed with emotion that just seems to constantly swell, and at many times, it makes you feel uneasy. It’s hard to guess what path the relationship is going down, so the mixture of sympathy and curiosity is very strong. The story was really nice, and one that many people could possibly relate to. Some bits of it reminded me of myself. There’s not a lot I’m going to say about the story, mostly because I don’t want to give anything away. There’s not a crazy twist or anything, I just want you to see everything unfold for yourself. It’s nice not knowing many things about these kinds of movies before going into them. Despite how strong the plot was, there were two things that I wasn’t a huge fan of. The first thing was the pacing. The movie felt a little bit long, and at times, the characters started to feel a little old. That doesn’t make much sense, but that’s just how my brain works. The second thing was the characters themselves. They were well written, but I found it hard to personally connect to them. Their situation felt a little personal, but the characters just never really grabbed me. But besides that, the majority of the movie was pretty enjoyable. Lastly, the soundtrack was extremely good, and I loved the feeling it adds to the movie. So much love and warmth, with a hint of sadness. Overall, I agree this is a good movie, but slightly overhyped. I’d still recommend it to most romance/drama fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
