Hellraiser (1987)
Hellraiser (1987)
Yep, 80’s horror still remains undefeated. There is literally nothing better than classic horror full of gruesome makeup and physical effects. Sure, there’s some horror movies out there that rely on CGI, and they turned out decent. But you simply can’t beat a movie like this. Does it have its weak moments? Absolutely. It’s certainly not perfect, and sometimes it’s a little overbearing, with some cheesy acting. It has its times where it feels stuck in a cycle, and the same stuff keeps happening. But when you reach the end, you just sit back and appreciate everything you’ve just seen. I love the story, which works both in a way that is familiar, but also very original. The way the Cedonites are depicted makes it seem almost like a sci-fi, but still has plenty of horror elements. Frank’s attempted escape and survival was cool, especially from a makeup perspective. You physically see his pain and feeling through his blood and guts. I know it’s not actually that deep, but I’m making it that deep. I do wish Pinhead could’ve been a little more menacing, considering how iconic he is. At this moment, I’m not sure if that’s because of his look, or his actual character. I still have the entire franchise to watch to understand why he’s so infamous. I love his look, but he didn’t completely do it for me. Overall, this movie isn’t the greatest of all time, but has some super strong moments, and provides a pretty entertaining experience. It’s movies like these that make me wish more directors would bring in more practical effects and freaking awesome makeup. I’d recommend this movie to most horror fans, especially if you love 80’s horror. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
