National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

  • This is one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time, only behind Elf and Home Alone 2. I get so excited to watch it every year, and it’s a fun tradition that me and my mom have. It’s funny because the first time I watched this movie, I didn’t care for it at all. But, the second time, I absolutely loved it, and I only enjoy it more and more. It’s easily the best movie in the National Lampoon Vacation series. It’s a great comedy, but one that also has its serious moments. I love the story, and I especially like how there isn’t any actual vacationing. It’s a really fresh change from the first two movies in the series. I also love how everyone is all cooped up in one house, and it only gets crazier from there. The whole “crazy family” plot can sometimes feel cliche, but this one goes over-the-top with the nutty family. The movie is also great because of how it shows Clark’s love for Christmas, as well as his want for an old-fashioned, traditional Christmas. There is obviously plenty of slapstick comedy, but the movie doesn’t totally shove it down your throat. There are constantly things to laugh at, but like I said, this movie also has its serious moments. They are really well placed, and they give you a break from all the laughs. All the heartfelt moments make this movie really great, and some may even get you emotional. The reason this movie is so much better than the first two is because of the way you get to see more depth from the characters. Clark’s love for his family, and his family’s love for him is really touching, in its own unique way. I also love how you get to see Clark’s relationship with his father. The acting was awesome, and everyone did a great job. Juliette Lewis and Johnny Galecki play Audrey and Rusty, and they are easily the best kids in the series. I also love all the crazy in-laws, especially Uncle Lewis and Aunt Bethany. They all drive you insane, but in a funny way. Cousin Eddie’s return was also awesome. The music was also great, and though cheesy at some points, there were some really great arrangements. During the more serious scenes, there was almost always a beautiful string section accompanying the emotions. It helps you focus on the deeper message of the scene, which is something the first two movies failed to do. Also, the inclusion of other Christmas songs, such as “Mele Kalikimaka'' and “Here Comes Santa Claus” was a great choice for the soundtrack. Overall, I would highly recommend this movie for all Christmas/comedy lovers. It’s such a fun watch, as well as a heartwarming message. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
