Grease (1978)

Grease

  • This is definitely a very fun and corny movie, but the cheesiness is what makes it so fun. It has the same vibe as High School Musical, which is why I like it so much. This movie is probably the best example you’ll see of the stereotypical “greaser and jocks/50’s high school” story and setting. It definitely exaggerates quite a bit of it, but again, that’s what makes it so fun. Now for some people, this movie may seem boring because the high school/romance storyline might seem cliche. But, I really enjoy it. A lot of the dialogue is pretty crappy, and I can’t stress the amount of corniness. A lot of it is pretty laughable, but it also has its serious moments. The cast is pretty great, and though there aren’t really a whole lot of notable names (besides Travolta and Newton-John), they all fit their characters well. I love all their looks and clothes, which helps perfectly fit the time and setting. The choreography is extremely good, and all the dance scenes are very energetic. And of course, the music is absolutely spot on. This definitely has one of the best soundtracks you’ll hear in a musical. The vocals are really good, and the team up of Travolta and Newton-John is super good. Their back and forth duo on “Summer Nights” and “You’re the One That I Want” is great for the movie, as it shows their feelings for each other, as well as adding some pep to the scene. The intro song that plays over the credits, “Grease”, is absolutely phenomenal. It was written by Barry Gibb and sung by Frankie Valli, and it’s one of the best songs written for a movie. My favorite song of the whole movie is “Hopelessly Devoted to You”, which is also one of the most beautiful songs ever written for a movie. Newton-John puts so much emotion behind each word and note. It’s so gorgeous, and you can really feel the love and pain behind it. Overall, this movie is fantastic, and though one of the cheesiest ones you’ll see, I love it. If you’re not a fan of musicals or romance, then it’s definitely not for you, but I think everyone should watch this at least once. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
