Gotham (Season 1) (2014-2015)
Gotham (Season 1)
Yeah, so this show is freaking awesome. I was already excited to start it, and once I did, I became hooked. It’s definitely one of the most interesting and exciting shows I’ve seen, and every episode is totally epic. Ben McKenzie has very quickly become my favorite Jim Gordon, and he absolutely kills it in the role. He just has the courageous cop attitude, and he’s able to portray it so much better than any other live-action Gordon has. Don’t get me wrong, Gary Oldman and Jeffrey Wright are awesome, but my man Ben just knocks it out of the park. Anyways, the season started off with the Wayne murders, and immediately picked up from there. Although the Wayne murders way overused in the Batman movies, being able to see how young Bruce copes with it was really intriguing, and I was completely invested. It’s so awesome to see young Bruce try to solve his parents murder, as well as a new-to-the-scene Gordon trying to help. In so many Batman movies, we do get to see the GCPD sometimes, but the reason this show is so gripping is that we get to see all the behind-the-scenes of the police department. The corruption and perversion of the police force is really entertaining, and seeing how the department is connected with the mafia and crime families is awesome. Speaking of which, getting to see way more of the Falcone vs Maroni battle is so freaking cool. Their feud is mentioned in many Batman movies, but being able to see it unfold is really suspenseful. I wasn’t a huge fan of Falcone’s casting, but David Zayas as Maroni was perfect. Other perfect castings include Sean Pertwee (who might be my favorite portrayal of Alfred), Cory Michael Smith as Nygma, and Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin (I also loved Peter Scolari as the Commissioner, mostly because I loved him in Newhart). Plus, the introduction of Cameron Monaghan as Jerome was an absolute bone chilling moment, and I’ve probably watched it 10 times. I would also say it has one of the best season finales I’ve seen. Ending the last episode with the discovery of the secret room in Wayne Manor with “Dance of the Knights” was so cool. Overall, the whole season is brilliant and very well written, and watching the mob bosses battle for control (among other minor plots) is thrilling. I would highly recommend watching the first few episodes to see if you like it, and I promise after 2 or 3, you will. This season is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
