Mickey 17 (2025)
Mickey 17
The months leading up to this film were very exciting for me, mostly because I’m such a Robert Pattinson fanboy. Even just his name alone was enough to get me extremely interested. But over the last week, I’ve binged all of Bong Joon-ho’s feature films, which only got me more excited. I can finally say that after watching all of Bong’s films, he has now solidified himself as one of my favorite directors of all time. This one in particular shows his style so well, and like his other pieces of work, he has some great themes. The sociopolitical commentary is extremely relevant to today, which is one reason why the film hits so hard. The themes around immigration and social class really hits you in the feels. The way it was written into the characters was phenomenal. Mickey represents the blue collar workers that keep things running, and Kenneth Marshall represents the much too powerful government, the billionaires, and dare I say, a certain…….American leader. I just love the way Bong wrote this film to fully replicate the thoughts, feelings, and events that have been in this country for the last several years. And the best part, like everything else he’s done, is that he made this entertaining. You can learn from it, but you can still have a really good time. You just need to see this for yourself to understand the commentary behind each character and situation. The acting is absolutely amazing, with a very comedic yet aggravating (in a good way) performance from Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette. But of course, Pattinson fully steals the spotlight, and I’d go as far to say that he needs an Oscar nomination for this. His voice, his persona, his different identities. Everything he does is perfect. He’s one of the greatest actors to ever live. The visual effects were insanely good, especially when it comes to the space scenes and the creepers. Yes, you can tell they’re CGI, but it’s done so smoothly that you just get so immersed and believe everything around you is real. The production design is also fantastic. All the world building that this film does is great. Overall, this film is well made, and though it’s not one of Bong’s absolute best, it’s in no way bad at all. It also did take me a little bit to fully get into it, but once you do, hang on and don’t let go. I’d recommend it to all sci-fi fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
