Blazing Saddles (1974)

Blazing Saddles

  • This is one of the most infamous comedies ever made, and I hear it quoted constantly. The first time I watched this, I wasn’t really a huge fan, but after rewatching it, I can say I enjoyed it so much more the second time. This is definitely raunchy and offensive, but that’s what makes it so great. Comedy is subjective, so if you can’t handle over-the-line jokes, then this isn’t the movie for you. However, I find it hilarious, and everybody I know who’s seen it agrees. The acting, writing, and music are all great. I love the characters, and even though there are some that are really obnoxious and hard to like, the majority are pretty funny. It definitely takes some time to get past the dumbness of some of the characters. Cleavon Little was absolutely perfect in the role of Bart, and I wouldn’t want anyone else to take that spot. His line deliveries are always spot-on, as well as his personality. I also really loved Gene Wilder in this movie. The first movie I ever saw with him was Willy Wonka, so seeing a shaggy, alcoholic version of him is different, yet funny. I love his character, and his gunslinger persona is awesome. He reminds me of a spoofed version of Dude from Rio Bravo. Although some of the other characters are hard to like, the actors did a great job. The story is good, and it keeps a serious plot while still throwing lots of comedic spin into it. This comedy is good for that reason. It doesn’t throw the comedic element in your face, and though it’s constantly present, you still get invested into the story. It also has the traditional western feel to it, obviously with tons of comedic relief. I love the soundtrack, and even though some of it feels a bit cliche, there are several scenes where the movie makes it both hilarious and heroic. It’s one of my favorite western soundtracks. I also LOVE the scene with Count Basie and his band, and I totally flipped out the first time I saw it. Count Basie is one of my favorite swing musicians/band leaders, so having that scene is special to me. The last thing I’ll say is that the final 10 minutes is one of the greatest endings in cinematic history. It throws a total curveball, and it’s one of the most genius turns a movie has ever taken. I love it immensely, and I’d watch this movie just for the last 10 minutes. Overall, I’d definitely recommend it to western/comedy fans, and Mel Brooks did a great job making this movie. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
