Companion
I had debated seeing this in theaters a couple months ago, but I guess I just never got around to it. I don’t think I really missed much, but it was definitely a good film. Going into it, I was thinking it might be extremely reminiscent of other robot/android films, which in many ways, it was. You can see the inspiration that previous films had on this, such as ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’. However, this one is still entertaining, with a couple nice little elements that felt new and unique. The story is simple enough, which is exactly what this kind of film needs. It’s not over the top and doesn’t try to cram too much into one thing. It’s easy to follow along with, and you don’t have to think too hard about it. It’s kind of like ‘M3GAN’ but if ‘M3GAN’ was actually good. The performances were fun and a little silly, though they got much darker towards the end. I love how everyone starts out happy-go-lucky, and then by the very end, you feel disgusted by a certain someone. My boy Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher definitely take the spotlight, though Lukas Gage and Harvey Guillen are also great. Plus, Rupert Friend was a very nice treat. The action/intense scenes were thrilling, and maybe my favorite scene of the whole film was the dinner scene with the candle. Seeing that part in the teaser absolutely intrigued me, so finally watching it made me very happy. Just the mystery around it was great. By the time you hit that scene in the film, everything makes sense, and the tension just about hits its climax. Very nice, very nice. My final thought is that the soundtrack was absolutely fantastic, and a very nice surprise. There were some great needle drops from Herb Alpert, The Turtles, and Samantha Song with the Bee Gees. Those are just a few. I always get so happy when a song that I know plays, and I can sing along to it. Music makes the movie. Overall, this film was extremely solid, and though it has a couple cliches and clearly takes influence from previous sci-fi/thrillers, it’s still fun and entertaining. I’d probably recommend it to most sci-fi/horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
