Zodiac (2007)
Zodiac
So this is basically one of the best movies I’ve ever watched in my life. I’m even considering putting it in my personal top 20 greatest movies ever made. I knew it was gonna be good, but not THAT good. Like, ridiculously good. It’s so perfect and I think it’s gonna be awhile before I watch a movie this good again. If you’ve seen it, then hopefully you know what I’m talking about. The story is based on actual case files from the Zodiac killer case, so the accuracy is better than other “based on true events” movies. I’m a huge true crime fan, so sitting through this was a huge treat. Following the case from square one, and then going through 20 something years was just….enlightening. It sheds some light on the case, although it obviously hasn’t gone anywhere since then. It stinks that it’s still unsolved, because I seriously need to know everything. Back on track here, it was brilliantly written. You can definitely see the influence this has had on other films. It’s on the same level as other detective films such as ‘Se7en’ and ‘The Batman’. In fact, Matt Reeves' Riddler is actually based on the Zodiac killer, so you can clearly see how Matt used this film as an influence for his writing. So back to this movie, the characters were all great, with some seriously good performances. I don’t think there was anything Oscar worthy, but each person showed up ready to play. The big three (Gyllenhaal, Ruffalo, and RDJ) all shined brightly, with important roles that really made an impact on the case. Their determination was amazing. They make you feel like you’re on the case with them. The score was really good, and very prominent in certain scenes where your heart is racing. Also, despite a lot of this movie being dialogue, there were certainly some scenes where I was on the edge of my seat. One scene in particular where I was legitimately nervous. Despite the 2 hour and 37 minute runtime, it felt very fast paced, and I never got bored once. This masterpiece from David Fincher just simply can’t be ignored. Overall, it’s perfect in any way possible, and one of the best movies ever made. I would HIGHLY recommend it to all crime fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it NOW!
