The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024)
The Seed of the Sacred Fig
I’ll be the first to admit it: I did have a little bit of a tricky time getting through this film, even though it is very well made. Reason being is that it’s just a few minutes under three hours, and having to read subtitles for that long really made me get restless at times. That’s just a me thing, I’m not degrading the film in any way. There’s actually quite a bit where the dialogue isn’t necessary at all, and you go on an adventure just based on physical expression, actions, and the whole third act. But of course, the dialogue is important, as this is a film that tells a story about standing up to authoritarian figures and powers. It does great commentary on unethical and controlling government leadership, while using real life footage to help drive the message home. It’s not anything I’ve ever related to, nor probably ever will, but it’s still a story that one can connect to in more ways than you’d expect. The characters (at least the women) are all relatable and by the end, you’re rooting for them hard. Especially given the surroundings and circumstances around the characters. The performances were all strong, and though they aren’t anything insane, they are all natural and grounded. There’s a reason this was nominated for Best International Feature Film. It’s very solid, has an interesting backstory (especially with the director), and at times, it’s almost a horror movie. Though like I said, it’s very long, so it might be hard to sit through for some people, but it’s still great. I’d probably recommend it to most political drama fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
