The Favourite (2018)
The Favourite
I finally got around to having my first Yorgos Lanthimos experience. Let’s just say it was a unique one. This movie definitely wasn’t what I expected. After seeing it, I’m not totally sure how I feel about it. It was well made, but very odd in many aspects. Yorgos’ style of filmmaking is one I haven’t seen before, by any director. You can very clearly see what his vision is. That’s the part I’m still trying to figure out. I liked it, but it was also a little strange, so I’ll probably need to check out more of his stuff for it to really grow on me. Story-wise, I liked this well enough, and it was pretty well written. I can’t say how historically accurate this is, but it does a great job of capturing the likeness of life in 18th century England. The characters were pretty good, and the acting was top notch. The trio of Colman, Stone, and Weisz was pretty much perfect. Plus, you have Nicholas Hoult too, so there aren’t any complaints in the acting department. The cinematography was very eye popping, and probably some of the best of 2018. I love the collection of shots throughout the movie, although the fish eye lens was very weird at times. It caught me off guard most of the time, but it’s something I’ve rarely seen in a movie. The costume design was also perfect. The dresses were extravagant, the robes were flowy, and those wigs were just awesome. Overall, this movie was pretty good, although it was slow for me at times, and a tad bit boring at parts. I’d probably recommend this if you like dramas or black comedies. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
