The Zone of Interest (2023)
The Zone of Interest
I will try my best keeping this review short, because I seriously don’t want to spoil anything. I will say this: I can certainly understand why it’s been nominated for Best Picture. Cause believe me, it packs such an emotional punch that you won’t be ready for. In a way, I kind of was, because it was pretty close to what I expected. However, it includes scenes and sounds that I hadn’t prepared myself for. You leave with a very heavy feeling, especially since it’s a Holocaust movie. The story itself is extremely simple: it’s just life. The entire movie is literally just about the life of a German family. It’s that easy. It was wonderfully written, but it does feel a little dragged out at times. Because there isn’t a main goal or anything, it doesn’t feel like it goes anywhere. However, I love seeing the family’s POV of the Holocaust. In most WWII movies, it’s usually from a soldier or victim’s perspective. In this one, it’s solely focused on the family. If I say anything I may give something away, so I’ll move on. Just know that it’s very well written and very impactful. The sound (and minimal music) was insanely good, and it’s a key part of the movie. I can’t say why, but you’ll find out. The cinematography was also really good, and you get a sad but good glimpse of Nazi-occupied Poland. I’m gonna quit while I’m ahead, because if I keep going, I’ll say too much. It’s just such a good movie that’s extremely powerful, while still being so simple. Kudos to Jonathan Glazer for making one of the best movies of 2023. I’d recommend this to all WWII/history fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
