Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Here it is, my favorite Harry Potter film (arguably). I think I kind of flip flop between this one and the Goblet of Fire, but at the end of the day, this one just barely beats out that one. I’m not sure why I’ve always felt attached to this one. It’s my favorite book of the series, so maybe my love for it stems from that. Something about this one is just special. It’s not the best movie of the franchise, but my favorite nonetheless. I love the story, which falls in line nicely with some of my…political beliefs (my FBI agent may get me in trouble for what I’m about to say). Let’s just say that I like seeing a bunch of school students go behind the back of the government and defy them in every way. Having the Ministry interfere at Hogwarts was a very nice change from the previous few movies. It adds a whole new spin to the movie, while still having an epic battle with Voldemort and the Death Eaters. In fact, the fight at the Ministry between the Death Eaters and the students, and then Voldy vs. Dumbledore, is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time, and a huge reason why this movie is my favorite of the franchise. Everything about the movie is fantastic. There are a couple small moments where the VFX is a bit wonky, like Grawp or some of the centaurs. It definitely has the late 2000’s special effects look. But let’s get to the main villain of the movie: not Voldemort, not Lucius Malfoy, but Dolores Umbridge. Arguably the most unlikable character to ever be put in a book or movie. She’s just the most evil woman of all time, and I can’t help but love Imelda Staunton’s performance. She captures Umbridge perfectly, and though you come to hate her, I also have massive respect for Staunton for taking on that role. Enough about her. Just a final thought, the music was solid, though a very small downgrade from the first few films. Overall, this is my favorite Harry Potter film, and the book is even better. I’d definitely recommend it, but obviously be caught up in the franchise. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
