The Holiday (2006)
The Holiday
As sappy as this film is, yes, I did enjoy it. It seems to be the consensus that it’s well liked among the masses, though the critics aren’t as huge a fan. I feel like that’s usually the case with these kinds of rom-coms. This one kind of felt like ‘Love Actually’, in terms of story. It focuses on four main people who get caught up with romance, so it doesn’t feel super original. But I did definitely get into the drama between everyone, and stuck with it until the end. I was much more into Iris and Miles, as opposed to Amanda and Graham. But it was hard not to be obsessed with Graham. I mean, Jude Law is Jude Law. Absolutely gorgeous in every way. The rest of the characters are alright, and not super memorable. I liked Arthur a lot as well, cause he was such a nice old man. But all the characters are kind of your average rom-com cast. The performances were pretty solid, with a good blend of comedy and romance. There were some good touchy feely moments, and some where you just laughed and had fun. I have two final thoughts. One, the score by Jerry Goldsmith was beautiful and very underrated. I loved what it adds to the lovey dovey scenes. That man can do it all. Lastly, and possibly my most controversial thought: this is not a Christmas movie. Yes, it takes place at Christmas, but this is a film you could watch at any point in the year, and it wouldn’t feel out of place. It’s not a Christmas movie. Come fight me. Overall, this film is corny at times, and not the best written, but it’s still pretty entertaining and has some memorable scenes. I may or may not watch it again, I don’t know yet, but I’d probably recommend it to most rom-com fans.
