Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire (2024)
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
I was a bit disappointed with this movie, but then again, I wasn’t expecting too much anyways. Not that it was bad or anything, but the story never really grasped me, and the human characters weren’t particularly great. The biggest highlight was easily the action and the creature designs. Every second Godzilla was on screen, it was one of the most beautiful things ever. I actually think of all the MonsterVerse movies, this is the one in which he looks the best. Kong looked amazing as well. His rugged form with the scars across his chest was glorious. The antagonists were awesome as well. I won’t say who they are for spoilers, but they looked friggin sweet. Anyways, let’s move on to the not-so-great characters. The only two good human characters were Bernie and Jia. They were mildly interesting, but everyone else seemed kind of shallow. I do think this one does a good job of balancing the monsters and humans, much like ‘Godzilla vs Kong’. Even though the story balances the characters, I don’t think it was that interesting. It was basically just good vs evil, like past movies. The team ups were a spectacle, and the fights were awesome. But by the end, I wished some of the human story would’ve been shortened. My last two comments are positive ones. The CGI was a little overbearing, but also really good, and like I said, the creature designs were on point. The scenery was also fantastic. And lastly, Tom Holkenborg, or the legendary Junkie XL, delivered a pretty solid score, and though a couple little bits were cliche, the booming bass and monsters themes were so cool to hear in theaters. Overall, this movie wasn’t the best ever, but it had some very fun moments in between somewhat boring plotlines. I’d recommend this to most kaiju/MonsterVerse fans.
