A Different Man (2024)
A Different Man
My first sentence will be this: whatever you think this film is about, it’s probably nothing you’re expecting. I was going into it looking for a nice drama, perhaps based on a true story. I had no knowledge of the synopsis, and I’m glad that was the case. Because by the end, I felt so beaten and broken, but also touched and hopeful. Every twist and turn along the way was a very nice surprise, and the film doesn’t hold back on its emotional punches. I won’t go into specifics on the story, because I really want you to be surprised. But I can say that it’s one of the best of the year. It teaches acceptance of people who look different, and that they are normal, just like everyone else. It teaches that physical beauty is not the only kind of beauty. It teaches how to be yourself, accept yourself, and love yourself. The best possible messages are taught, and I’m so happy that the film focuses on disfigurement and disabilities. Especially as someone who grew up around people with special needs. Sebastian Stan absolutely brings everything he has for this, and his Golden Globe win was well deserved. He does a lot of communicating with his eyes and facial expressions that projects a lot of emotion. But the biggest awards snub is Adam Pearson as Oswald. That man absolutely deserves every nomination there is, and with the Oscar nominations in just a few hours, I’m seriously hoping he gets one. His joy and loving personality zaps you through the screen. Lastly, the makeup for this film was incredible, with the very talented Mike Marino bringing a realistic and compassionate look to Edward. Overall, this film is one of the best of the year, and I’d highly recommend it to everyone. It hits in more ways than you thought possible, and has some very interesting plot decisions. A24 doesn’t miss. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
