There Will Be Blood (2007)
There Will Be Blood
Paul Thomas Anderson is an absolute genius. Daniel Day-Lewis is an absolute genius. Everyone who worked on this movie is an absolute genius. Because it was GOOD. From start to finish, every single detail was absolutely necessary, and absolutely beautiful. I’m gonna try to stop using the word “absolutely”. The movie is just absolute. It is complete and just about perfect. I loved the story, which shows a great (but almost tragic) look at capitalism. The amount of selfishness and greed that is shown is just awesome, in the wrong kind of way. I say it’s awesome by the way the bad qualities are demonstrated. I also love how it’s set in the early 1900’s. It’s a nice change from the more modern day movies about profit, property, and economics. The cinematography was absolutely stunning, with great visuals in every single frame. The darker color grading was a good representation of the whole mood of the film. Completely gorgeous. But of course, Daniel Day-Lewis was the spotlight. His performance was definitely deserving of his Osacr. Like I said, the selfishness and greed in this movie was obvious, and especially through him. He does a unbelievable job of being so straight faced, but providing so much meaning behind his voice and eyes. Paul Dano was great too, though I wish he had a little more screen time. Lastly, Jonny Greenwood’s score was freaking amazing, and though it wasn’t always present, it was PHENOMENAL. A perfect representation of the time and characteristics of everyone on screen. Overall, this movie was one of the best I’ve seen from the 2000’s, and definitely needs to be studied for years to come. I’d recommend it to all drama/history fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
