Talking Heads: 77 (1977)
Talking Heads: 77
Here it is. The debut album of one of the most famous bands ever, Talking Heads. I’ve never really been interested at all in Talking Heads until recently, so I said what the heck, let’s give them a try. And let me say this: I might be onto something here. I was very impressed from what I heard. Especially for a debut album. The whole thing gives off a very solid sound, and there’s one specific thing I absolutely loved: it was consistent from start to finish. I can honestly say there wasn’t a single bad track on here. Usually, you might get two or three that feel a little out of place. But this album doesn’t miss. It flows together so nicely. Their sound reminds of several other styles and groups, yet it’s so original and nothing I’ve never heard before. Some of it reminded me of early Beatles, some of 70’s Beach Boys, but despite that, it’s all so new and unique. I absolutely loved it. I think the three biggest tracks that stuck out to me were “The Book I Read”, “Don’t Worry About the Government”, and “Psycho Killer”. In a way, they were all very moving, even if they’re a bit random. You can pick out every single instrument and notice the importance of its part. My only complaint is that I don’t think David Byrne has the best voice in the world. Some songs he sounded really good, and others felt a bit…funky. But he’s growing on me. The first few songs took some adjusting, but by the end, I was vibing hard. Also, based on this album alone, I can already say that he is legitimately an amazing songwriter. Overall, this was a fantastic first impression, and I’m super excited to continue my Talking Heads journey. I’d definitely recommend this to all music fans. This album is officially Berry Approved, so go give it a listen!
