Cape Fear (1991)
Cape Fear
“If you hang on to the past, you die a little everyday.” This is the remake of the 1962 film of the same name, and I have to say that I was slightly disappointed by this movie. I’m not saying it was bad or boring, I just wasn’t as huge a fan that I was expecting. I do really like the story, which I’m definitely sure is way more darker and sinister than the ‘62 version. I haven’t actually seen the ‘62 version, but the fact that Scorsese was able to bring Mitchum and Peck (who were in the original) to have some cameos was cool. It was definitely suspenseful and thrilling, for the most part. The first half was good, but the last half was really good. It picked up full pace, especially the final 30ish minutes. It was full steam ahead and definitely kept me invested. The performance of De Niro is easily one of my favorite roles of his. He did a ridiculously good job, even though his false accent was a tiny bit iffy. But I’m willing to overlook that. His scenes on the boat were so fantastic, and he was basically born for this role. I also liked the rest of the cast, though they didn’t seem to stand out as much. The music was pretty good, as it provided the classic but slightly cliche thriller feel. Several bits of it had a great Psycho-y sound, which only made me more paranoid than I already was. I also loved the makeup they used for a certain scene towards the end (I can’t say cause spoilers). Overall, this movie was solid, though I was *slightly* disappointed. But it’s definitely one I’d watch again. It was good, and I would recommend it to all thriller fans, especially if you love movies that keep you paranoid. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
