Donnie Darko (2001)
Donnie Darko
As much as I will never understand this movie, it will still come in as the 28th perfect movie in Berry history. If you asked me what this film is about, I wouldn’t know what to tell you, but man is it good. I truly love every second of it, and it’s so interesting to see everything unfold. It also seems open to so many possibilities, as well as being very subjective. And as much as I love to break apart movies and examine everything, this is one that I try not to think too much about. Not in a bad way, there’s just so many oddities that I like to have everything shrouded in mystery, if that makes sense. The story is just twisted, and like I said, I love the mystery of it. You always question what is fantasy and reality, or if reality even exists at all. It just…works. I could go on about it all day. Jake Gyllenhaal is legitimately perfect as Donnie, as it’s one of the best casting choices of all time. I love love LOVE what was done with Swayze’s character, and it was cool to see Maggie Gyllenhaal cast as Donnie’s sister (it gives an authentic love/hate relationship). Oh yeah, and Drew Barrymore is ridiculously gorgeous. The soundtrack is both beautiful and tragic, with a depressing yet peaceful sound. Oh, and the use of “Head Over Heels” and “Mad World”? FREAKING PERFECT. I think I’ll quit while I’m ahead, though I’d love to do a Raspberry Bush episode on this, preferably with someone who can give me more insight on this film. Overall, it’s perfect in every single way: from awesome acting, a confusing but intriguing story, creepy yet calming music, and of course, Frank. I would HIGHLY recommend this to everyone who loves sci-fi/drama/horror/psychological movies. Seriously, this film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it NOW!
